First and foremost, my condolences to the family of Charles and to my cousin, Carlos. He may be gone in body, his sprit will never be forgotten.
Just a little history lesson in what I know about the 82nd. The motto of the 82nd Airborne is, “All the way! Death from Above”. This motto hasn’t changed since the 82nd’s inception in 1917 (WWI). They were and still are a light infantry warrior specialized by parachuting into zones with their weapons and equipment at the ready. Their training alone just to become a member is not for the flower cutters. It’s takes someone very special...I’m positive the washout rate is extremely high, even back when Charles received his Airborne tab.
Just below the Airborne tab is the “AA” shoulder patch. It stands for “All-American”. How proud he must of been to be a part of an elite group of specially selected men. I wish I knew then what I know nowadays I write this. This alone is a true testament of how he lived.
Some of my earliest memories of my childhood includes Charles. I was about 5-6 yrs old and Charles was married to my Aunt Shirley. Carlos was a baby when I first remember seeing Charles. I remember the drive taking so long to get to AZ from CA. When we arrived I’d be so scared of Charles because he’d tighten up his jaw muscles. It was the most intimidating thing I’d ever see at my young age. I’m positive he did it just to shut me up...it worked and it worked well.
About a year later, we went to AZ again. This time my parents left me there. I don’t remember how long I was with them but it seemed like an eternity. Probably the longest time in my entire life I was behaved...including the drive back to my parents in CA. I was in the back seat of a red Volkswagen Beatle, in the middle of summer, windows down, Charles driving, Aunt Shirley and baby Carlos in the front seat being breast fed the entire time we drove.
Even though it’s just a few memories, and I read in the Obituary he was most proud of his children, I want you all to know that his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchild should be proud of him. I know I am just by the legacy he left behind.
Trust me, an All-American Airborne is watching from above, free from pain, tiredness, and sorrow. Heck, he’s probably up there trying to intimidate God by flexing his jawbones.
Rest In Peace, sir. Job well done.
