Obituary of Richard Douglas Carey
Richard Douglas Carey, was born on August 18th 1930 and peacefully left this world on July 21st 2017.
Richard, or Dick as he liked to be called, grew up in Amherst Massachusetts on the Carey family farm. When not in school, Dick did his part on the farm; milking cows, chopping wood, gardening, and the like. He was a proud Alumni from Amherst College and the University of Arizona, earning a Bachelor's Degree in Geology. He spent summers hitchhiking across the country to Montana to work for the Forest Service, thinning our forests and fighting fires. Between colleges, Dick enlisted in the Navy and received an honorable discharge. He was an avid reader and had a passion for studying/reading history, especially anything dealing with Native American Indian history or his Scottish roots.
Dick moved to Tucson in 1956, finished college and accepted a position with Bear Creek Mining Company as a surveyor in Safford Arizona. On weekends, Dick and friends would make the drive to Tucson; it was here that he met Delores Giacomazza, the first love of his life. They were married in 1958 and soon started building a family, so they moved to Tucson and welcomed their first child Scott. With a budding family (they welcomed son Rick in 1967), Dick got what was supposed to be a short-term job with Haskell Linen Supply that turned into a 30+ year career. He was a loving, hard-working husband and father, who continued to enjoy his passions of reading, rocks, everything Indian, and his proud Scottish heritage. He became a widower in 1976 and four years later found a second love, Helen Meyer, enjoying a 20+ year marriage before once again becoming a widower. Dick was known for his sharp (and sometimes corny) sense of humor, was quick to give you a history lesson, and was always willing to lend a helping hand to others in need.
Dick is survived by his children: Scott (Nancy) and Rick Carey; Harry Meyer (Josie), Diane Puntenney (Tim), Mike Meyer (Cam), and John Meyer (Tori); and his only sister Raelene Rodgers. He was also blessed with 9 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. A Celebration of Life service will be held Saturday August 5th at 11:00am at St Francis de Sales Catholic Church, 1375 S. Camino Seco, Tucson Arizona. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made in Richard's name, to either the Wounded Warrior Project or Folds of Honor.
