Everard Nicholas Cupo Obituary

Everard Nicholas Cupo (97), loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, died peacefully into everlasting life on April 7, 2024 while under the care of Casa De La Luz Hospice in Tucson, AZ.  Everard (“Ev”) was born in Schenectady, NY on November 22, 1926.  He was the son of Joseph Nicholas Cupo and Maria Agnes (Boscia) Cupo (Filaseta).  He was an accomplished tinkerer with an innate ability for repairing and refurbishing items.
 
Upon graduation from Draper High School in Schenectady in early 1945, he was drafted into the US Army.  He was on an infantry replacement troop ship in the Philippines, headed for the 24th Infantry Division to be part of the invasion of Japan when the atomic bombs were dropped.  He then became part of one of the first waves of Allied occupying forces in Japan once the war ended.  Soon after, in 1947, he was honorably discharged and returned home to Schenectady where he initially worked in his uncle’s garage/body shop.  He soon followed in his father’s footsteps by becoming a licensed beautician.  Originally working in his father’s shop, he opened his own salon (“Everard’s Beauty Fair”) where he garnered many loyal customers.  He retired in the mid-1970s due to health issues. 
 
Meanwhile, in 1952, he married longtime friend Ruth Marion Smith also from Schenectady and together they raised three sons (John, Steven, and Michael).  The family was active in the Second Reformed Church of Rotterdam (Cobblestone Church) in Rotterdam, NY.  Over the years, Everard served on the consistory, acted as treasurer, and sang in the choir using his fine tenor voice.  During the 1960s, Everard performed with an all-male German choir in Schenectady, becoming proficient in the language.  After retiring, he loved passing time shopping and bargain hunting.  He was fascinated with electronics and always had a sizable collection of watches, cordless phones, and clocks on hand, much to the amusement of his grandchildren.  In 2006, Everard and Ruth sold their home and moved to South Plainfield, NJ to be nearer to son Michael’s family.  After Ruth died in in 2008, Everard moved from his apartment in Plainfield, NJ in 2010 to Washington, DC to live with son Steven.  In 2017, he moved with Steven to Tucson, AZ where he took up the hobby of stargazing.   
 
Survivors include three sons, John J. Cupo (Lynn) of North Las Vegas, NV, Steven R. Cupo (Daniel) of Tucson, AZ, and Michael E. Cupo (Alicia) of South Plainfield, NJ; seven grandchildren, Stephanie E. Cupo of South Plainfield, NJ, David J. Cupo of Narberth, PA, Michael R. Cupo (Maria) of Piscataway, NJ, Jeffrey R. Cupo (Nick) of South Plainfield, NJ, Joseph R. Cupo (Ann) of Martinez, CA, Audrey L. Cupo of South Plainfield, NJ, and Christopher A. Cupo of Middlesex, NJ; and three great-granddaughters (Harper, Rowan, and Emily).  He was preceded in death by his parents, brother John Joseph Cupo, and wife.  His cremains will be interred in Viewland Cemetery, Rotterdam, Schenectady County, NY.
