Obituary of James Roger Dixon

Jim was born December 5, 1942 in Knoxville, Tennessee to Charles and Boleda Dixon. He had one brother, Robert Dixon of Seymour, Tennessee. He was married to his wife Joan for 53 years. Together they had two children, Shari and James. Jim was the grandfather to Ryan and Evan Carlson.

 

   At the age of six Jim received Christ as his personal Savior. As a boy, God gave Jim the ability to memorize 300 Bible verses each year so he could go to a Christian summer camp free. He participated in speakers' tournaments as a youth and won.

 

   Jim earned several degrees, a Bachelor of Arts from Trinity Bible College in Clearwater, Florida (1968), Bachelor of Arts from the University of Tennessee (1980), Masters of Divinity (1983) and Doctor of Ministry (1986) from Southern Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky.

 

   During Jim’s professional career, he pastored several churches in Tennessee, Florida, Kentucky and Arizona. He was also the associational missionary for over two years in Paducah, Kentucky. He retired from the ministry in 2014.

 

   The most memorable events that were the most special in his life were the birth of his children and grandchildren, and going to see Tennessee win the 1998 national championship in football with James. He also enjoyed traveling and going to all the old and new baseball parks with James from 1998 to 2019 each summer. He was also an avid believer in his nightly 9:00 bowl of ice cream.

   In the words of his good friend, Paul House, Jim will be remembered as “Pastor-Teacher-Author-Friend.”   

 

   In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. St. Jude held a special place in Jim’s heart.

 

Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, March 16, 2024 at the First Baptist Church, 1447 S. 7^th Street, Sierra Vista at 10:30AM with Dr. Paul House officiating.
