Lila and Herb were beloved members of First Christian Church, Disciples of Christ in Carbondale who I so enjoyed interacting with there. We also shared working at SIUC & I too enjoyed walks by Campus Lake. My late husband, Marvin Troutt, worked with Lila for 3 years and he was very impressed by her competence, intelligence and pleasant demeanor. Lila always seemed to wear a pleasant smile that made folks feel at home with her. I felt I was a better person just by knowing her.

Walking the Lake Path
(warm sunny day)
All the turtles climb the log and there are a lot to see.
Glad are they to leave the bog; the air is so balmy.
(cool overcast day)
Not a turtle on the log, there's not a one to see.
They do not want to leave the bog to have a look at me.
Written by Mom - being inspired by her walks around campus lake.

When I Was But a Kid
I used to run about the farm and laugh at things I did.
I did those stunts that caused alarm, when I was but a kid.
I'd chase the cat and pull her tail; such naughty things I did
How loudly would I screech and wail while in the barn I hid.
My Pa would catch me by the pants and tell me he forbid.
But I would listen to his chants when I was but a kid.
I'd climb the trees, torment the dog, and in the mud I'd skid.
Unstack the firewood log by log and hide it under lid.
That time is past, those days are done, my yearns now at their mid.
But how I chuckle at the fun when I was but a kid.
A poem Mom wrote in high school and edited it later in life. She loved growing up on the farm and always talked about it.

If I should ever leave you whom I love, To go along the Silent Way, grieve not,
Nor speak of me with tears, but laugh and talk Of me as if I were beside you there
(I'd come--I'd come could I but find a way! But would not tears and grief be barriers?)
And when you hear a song or see a bird I loved, please do let the thought of me
Be sad...For I am loving you just as I always have...you were so good to me!
There are so many things I wanted still To do--so many things to say to you...
Remember that I did not fear...It was Just leaving you that was hard to face...
We cannot see Beyond...But this I know; I loved you so--'twas heaven here with you!
A poem Mom had framed - in memory of Dad
