I grew up in Framingham, Mass watching Shelby Scott on the local news, braving every severe rainstorm, snowstorm and hurricane that hit the area. She was my hero -- how did she manage to remain so calm and self-possessed even though she was at risk of being blown away or cast into the turbulent ocean waves? Imagine my delight when as an adult I met her in negotiations and then we served as trustees together. It turned out that she was just as energetic, vibrant and passionate about life then as she appeared to be on television. What a force she was! And such great humor. I feel fortunate to have known her and had the pleasure of her company. Many will miss her, including me, but I will always remember her with joy in my heart.

Shelby was a one of a kind gal with a life so full of purpose that her legacy will live on and on. I was so privileged to serve with her on both the AFTRA National Board and the AFTRA H&R Board of Trustees for over 2 decades. Shel was a real mentor to me in both arenas, she was wonderful to travel with and to visit. We laughed ourselves silly after meetings and she taught me how to build consensus when the meetings grew hot. She was one of a kind.
Her love of her family was evident as she often spoke of upcoming visits or things she wanted to do with all of you. It may have seemed at times that she was “all AFTRA, all the time” but that wasn’t the case…you were top of her list.
Because of being retired from working on the Board of Trustees I have not seen Shelby in over 6 years…but she was a dear friend to me and a truly great leader in both the unions and in my life.
I thank you for sharing her with us all….her legacy will go on and on as actors and broadcasters continue to be paid fairly and have health care that saves lives…and that is due in large part to Shelby.
I hear her laughter in my heart. I shall miss her to my dying day.
