I met Penny and Oluf in the late 80s when I was a student at Beijing Normal University. Penny was a lot of fun to be with and proud of the fact that many in her family were into education. She was so excited when I took her to see the kindergarten attached to the university. A joyful visit by Penny and Oluf, along with the adorable Grace and Lisa in Oxford, Ohio is shown in the 1989 photo, taken by their daughter Leslie. I will always treasure the fond memories of Thanksgiving and hog roast parties at Leslie’s home In Indiana. We had a great time when my mentor and friend Xiaopeng Wang brought me to visit Penny & Oluf at their home in Iowa City. I have a vivid memory of Penny and Oluf telling the stories of how they first met in Europe and traveled the world together. I am lucky to have met Penny. For over 30 years, I have enjoyed learning about her adventures and those in her lovely family. Penny’s passion for life and social justice, and her generosity will continue to inspire me. Penny lived a full life. R.I.P.
