As the last to be born in a family of four boys, I had to wait for a sisterly experience until after my older brothers married and provided me with sister surrogates, also known as sisters-in-law. Brother Jerry's selection of a bride soon led to the formation of a joyful, endearing and enduring sister-brother relationship between my surrogate sister, Darlene, and me.
When she joined our family, I was awed by Darlene's cheerful, optimistic disposition despite her earlier suffering from the detrimental effects of polio. Over the years I always looked forward to seeing her and Jerry because during and afterward I would consistently feel uplifted in spirit and animated in mood. Darlene's keen sense of humor was contagious and her outgoing geniality gratifying. She also was very talented and skilled in many ways.
I deeply thank and cherish Darlene for all of the wonderful, beloved memories she left for me to dwell upon.
