I knew Ellie as my fiction writing student at the University of Arizona, and later as a fellow-member of a little writing group. She was talented (though modest about it), charming, and wonderfully witty.
I will never forget an exchange in class, when another student said his writing output was meager because of his "commitment problems." Ellie jumped right on that pompous excuse. "Ah, commitment problems," she said with relish. "I have commitment problems putting on my socks. Oh no, not another sock!"
Truly a delightful person, and unlike anybody else. What a privilege to have known her. My condolences to daughter Ellen and all the family.
