Jerry and I hunted elk and deer together for many years. We had many fun times while hunting. One day Jerry got back to camp for lunch before I did. He put his rifle by the camper and sat down in a chair by the fire pit, and fell asleep. When I came into camp and saw this, I fired off a round from my rifle when I got close to him. Died laughing while watching Jerry scramble for his rifle. Jerry had this fear of snakes. One time we ran across another hunter that had a rattle snake skin with head as a hat band. I thoght Jerry was going to shoot that snake when the guy stuck his head in the truck window next to Jerry. RIP my friend. You will be missed by many. I will always cherish our time together as coworkers and hunting together.

It's weird, Mr. Fortner.
How do you sum up a lifetime of knowing someone? I feel like someone is asking me to explain affection in abstracts. I have known you only slightly less longer than Holly, but it feels like my whole life. I remember the cars you drove when I was a kid. I remember all the dogs you've had since Rusty and Dee Dee. I remember your address on Mountain View. I remember your phone number in Colorado, even still. I remember the way you used to hunt during the seasons, and the way you said Holly's name like no one else (sort of like 'Ollie!). I remember that you teased me relentlessly, and I'm pretty sure this turned me into a champion of teasing people. You licked your finger and wiped it across every tattoo I had, reacting in mock surprise when it didn't wipe off. You had a boisterous laugh and certainly considered yourself hilarious. You loved your wife and your family and were liked by everyone lucky enough to know you.
I remember when you retired from being a controller you were driving me somewhere. It was just the two of us, and you were talking about retirement. A lot of people fear it, but you seemed completely confident that you were gonna do nothing but what you wanted, and you were gonna enjoy it. Mostly outdoors, as I recall. Then you spent the next couple of decades traveling and being happy, and I always thought you had it made. I thought, "I want a life like that someday." I still do.
You told me once that you liked me, and trusted me, and I always felt so proud that you did. You offered your home to me whenever I needed it, with or without Holly, and I knew you meant it. You felt like family to me. You still do.
I want to thank you for every second you let me into your life. I've never known anyone quite like you, but I bet you'd say the same about me. I'll still remember all those summers playing cards at your family table as the Sun went down over the Rockies, or putting too much salt on Mrs. Fortner's beef and noodles, and you laughing and teasing and living in the moment right there next to me. You were the best. I wish I had told you that more. But I think you knew that. And frankly, I think you'd have agreed with me.
I love you, Mr. Fortner. Jerry. I will miss you always.

Jerry has always been a loving favorite nephew. Only 9 years difference in our age; so even as his uncle, feel as if we grew up together. Have spent many winters with them in South Texas, and loved those times. We will miss talking on the phone about hunting and fishing. Loved him very much. Leo and Shirley Moyers
