I worked with Valerie in the 70's at Children's Hospital in Buffalo! I can still hear her voice! We had so much fun whether it was a Happy Hour, a blizzard or traveling to No Carolina for the wedding of a coworker. I thought of her often! I know she loved her family more than anything! This beautiful lady certainly lit up our office and my life here in Tennessee. She made me laugh, and of course I cried those last times I saw her. Thank you to her beautiful family for sharing so much of her life that I would otherwise have not known, and helping me to understand better how she became so doggone independent. You are blessed to have had her so long, but all of us wish it could have been decades longer. I shall miss her.

I am heartbroken to learn of Ms. Valeria's passing. Through her beautiful daughter, Jennifer I became part of the family, as an adopted grandson to Ms Valeria, and as an adopted son to Jennifer. The love was felt through and through on many visits to their house. I was always fed many times not being able to move because of Ms Valeria and her daughter Jennifer telling me to "EAT UP, AND HAVE SOME MORE" We shared many laughs and was included in her mischief because of me telling her "She could be bad, because she could do no wrong as well as we got into trouble together." Even though her daughter, Jennifer would always find out! I will miss those happy times but will always cherish my time knowing Ms Valeria. Ms. Valeria I promise to protect over your beautiful daughter Jennifer as she is not only my adopted mother but a true loving best friend. We have lost a great Gem, but heaven has gained a True QUEEN! Rest in peace. My heartfelt condolences to Jennifer, Joseph, and the entire family.

We are so grateful that we were able to spend Christmas 2019 with Valeria and family at Jennifer's home in Tucson. Valeria welcomed us with open arms and was a breath of fresh air. Minutes after meeting her she asked me "Young lady, please tell me you put tomatoes and garlic in your gumbo." She made sure that we felt loved every moment that we were with her. Her incredible spirit will be missed. I will put some garlic and tomatoes in my gumbo for her.

I really expected her to make it to 100. She had that kind of grit, determination and love of life. She gave it her best shot. For many years she was a good friend to my mother and to me. I shall miss our Sunday morning calls to gossip about everything--especially The Bears or Tom Brady. My sympathy to Jennifer, Joseph, and Regina and all of her extended family. Rest in Peace Val..

Valerie is such an amazing person, that I will always refer to her in the present tense. She remains among us in the gifts that she shared as a person, as a friend. I know her through my friend, Jennifer Davis Paige, and have felt honored to share time with her. She always puts her hands on both of my cheeks, kisses me, and quietly thanks me for being a friend to her daughter. I always reply with thanking her for raising a daughter that is a good friend to me. My fondest memory is when Valerie, at age 95, took the time to come to our home to teach us how to make seafood gumbo. I listened intently to her detailed instruction, and marveled at the pride that was taken in the creation of the dish. My husband Ron, half way through, asked if he could offer Valerie some water or lemonade. She looked at him calmly, and said, "darling, do you have a shot of Jack Daniels". Ron quickly replied with, " yes I do, young lady". She smiled quietly, took the Jack Daniels, and continued her instruction of the recipe. This recipe will be handed on to my family and I treasure it as a piece of Valerie that she chose to share. She is forever in my heart, forever with me, and forever valued. She is larger than life, and lives on through us all. How blessed we are.

Our deepest condolences to Jennifer and the entire family. Valerie always added a smile to our Network of Extraordinary Women’s luncheons or any social gatherings. She was the epitome of what being an authentic woman is. We will miss Valerie's humor and her bright, quick, witty mind. We had the pleasure of discovering family in Tucson a couple of years ago and Valaria and Jacqueline Hurst-Semper were reunited after more than 60 years. We had so much fun with her and will forever cherish the July 4th party she inspired, the visits filled with good food, laughter and Val's beloved bourbon. It was so joyful to watch Val and Jacqueline catch up on their lives with laughter, pictures and old family stories. Val has touched our hearts and that's exactly where she'll forever stay. She was such a special lady. Rest in Paradise pretty lady.

Farewell to my dear cousin who I thought of more like my Aunt and Mentor. I am Jackie Hurst daughter Shea and when I first met Valeria is was as a result of my Aunt Una's funeral and the Marioneaux cousins I was introduced to through family. I loved Jennifer and her Mother at first glance and chat. Valeria was so full of YOUNG life and was inspiring to my mother Jackie. I watch my Mom in her eighties laugh and feel young again as she sat at the foot of a elder she grew to immediately love - and whose friendship brought such joy. Valeria would share stories and family highlights that we never grew tired of hearing. She was the youngest elder at her age in our family who stayed so youthful and wanting to travel and stay abreast of things. Her mind was sharp and she was wise in her teachings. I loved her with all my heart and I know she will be with us in spirit always and that she is in a better place of love and peace.
I thank God everyday for Hubert Marioneaux introducing me to this wonderful part of my family in AZ where my primary family lives, and what that short time of only 3 years of getting to know her...did to enhance and improve my family in AZ;s life. What a powerful, fun loving, intelligent beautiful woman she was...and we will all aspire to live long as she did and will always hold her close to our hearts. I am forever grateful and attached to Jennifer who I also love dearly and her generous sharing of time with her mom. Valeria we love You and will never stop - so enjoy heaven and we will see you again one day. Much love always - Shea

Will miss her so much. She was more of a best friend than an Aunt. When she moved to Baton Rouge to take care of her mother and I would visit from New Orleans my grandmother would put her out of the room saying I was her guest and not Valarie’s guest. My grandmother wanted me to tell her about my boyfriend who bought me a Turkey for Thanksgiving. Valeria and I would laugh but she always left the room. I will truly miss my friend and Auntie.
