Obituary of Lois Marie Cain

 

Lois M. Cain, Surgical R.N., 80, of Tucson, AZ passed away on July 9, 2020. She was born to Lillian and Chester Mackentire in 1939. She has now joined her older brothers, Jim and Donald, in heaven. She and her younger sister, Charlene (Mann), remained extremely close regardless of the physical miles between them. She is also survived by her youngest brother, Chester. She is survived by her loving husband of 59 years, Jim Cain. Their life long journey of love and adventure started in 1961. Jim’s Air Force career allowed them to live on each coast of the United States, and a few states in between, as well as a three year stay in Puerto Rico. They started their family within a year of marriage with a son, Mick, and over the next four years two daughters, Michelle (Laktash) and Andrea (Hatton), joined the family. Lois’s passion/career as a register surgical nurse allowed her the mobility needed for the wife of an Air Force Officer. She was a graduate of York Hospital School of Nursing, Class of 1960. She was an amazing homemaker and mother, while still managing to be an incredible nurse. She returned to school in 1978 at Chapman College to complete her Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing, and was further driven to become a certified operating room nurse. She was also a proud member of the Association of Operating Room Nurses (AORN). Over the course of her nursing career, she never lost the desire to learn, to teach, and encourage others joining the field of nursing. Lois often said she worked to support her habit - traveling the world. She, her husband, and their dear friends, Pat and Jerry Smith, traveled to all the corners of the earth. The ladies were both members of AORN and never missed an opportunity to go to the international and national conventions to share their expertise, keep current on their surgical skills and network with other nurses. They traveled to New Zealand, Australia, Russia, Scandinavia, England, France, Italy, Germany, Spain, Singapore and Hong Kong. They cruised through the Greek Islands, from Amsterdam to Zurich, and along the Alaskan coast. Of all the places on earth, Lois’s absolute favorite was the beaches of Hawaii; her face was pure joy whenever she was relaxing on the beach with the cooling ocean breeze. She created many beautiful memories with friends and family in Hawaii. Lois’s grandchildren, Jake Cain, Rose Steele, Sebastian Magaddino, Gunner Cain and Allison Hatton made her heart smile and she never missed an opportunity to spend time with them. She enthusiastically attended countless talent shows, grandparents lunches, baseball and softball games, graduations, birthdays, and holidays. She also made the everyday time special, too: karate in the living room, personal shopping sprees, coloring Easter eggs, refrigerator cookies, milkshake dates at Drake Diner, unlimited swimming at Gramma’s, drumstick ice cream, and Disney movies in the back room.
