Elizabeth LaVerne (Schmidt) Littleford (96) died on Sunday April 26, 2020 at Desert Hearts Adult Care Home, Tucson. Born in Washington, DC, she was the daughter of Daniel Steiner Schmidt and Elizabeth Loyola Harvey and the granddaughter of Julia Harvey with whom she lived in her late teens. She attended Cardozo Senior High School and was a clerical worker for fourteen years at the International Association of Machinists in Washington, D.C. LaVerne was later employed and relished working as a receptionist and dental assistant in Kensington, Maryland for twenty-eight years. She and her husband Wilson (Buck) Littleford moved to Tucson, Arizona in 1982 where they enjoyed a lengthy retirement, traveling each spring for many years to Maryland and Virginia to visit family.
LaVerne’s interests included crocheting and collecting Navajo jewelry as well as porcelain figurines, particularly reproductions of elephants in a variety of materials—stone, metal, jade, porcelain, etc. She and Buck also frequented the various casinos in Tucson and other locations in Arizona.
LaVerne was predeceased by her husband of 64 years, siblings Harvey Schmidt and Juanita McCawley, a granddaughter, Nicole Potkay and a great grandson, Chase Potkay. Survivors include two daughters Joyce (Stephen) Potkay of Germantown, Maryland and Patricia Matthews of Stafford, Virginia, five grandchildren, five great grandchildren, two nephews and a close companion of many years, Norman Schaffer of Tucson.
