Obituary of Lawrence Alan Hughston

Lawrence Alan Hughston Lawrence Alan Hughston, a gentle soul, a devoted son; a loving friend and brother. Larry was born in Sacramento, California at Sutter Hospital January 4, 1945. He was the youngest son of Betty and Fred Hughston. Except for his time in the Air Force when he served in Germany, and the time he attended the Art Academy in San Francisco living and working there as an independent artist, Larry lived his entire life in his beloved Sacramento, only coming to Tucson Arizona during the last 18 months of his illness to be with family. Passing October 17, 2019. Larry earned two art degrees, one from Sacramento State University and one from The Art Academy of Francisco now called the Art Academy University. He served his country honorably from 1969 until 1972 and received The Air Force Commendation Medal for Meritorious Service. He left the U.S. Air Force in the rank of Staff Sergeant. While attending the prestigious Art Academy he won awards every semester for his meticulous work. He worked for a few years as an independent artist then realized it was more lucrative to work for the State of California and do his art work on the side. Larry worked for the State of California as a graphic artist for 35 years. He worked in the California State Architects department for a number of years and then in the California State Department of General Services at the wonderful Ziggurat building, a familiar site on the Sacramento skyline facing the river. Larry was fascinated by airplanes, trains, and boats. He once flew in a WWII B17, and a bi-plane here in Tucson. He had a beautiful model train set that he put up every Christmas to go around the tree, and he enjoyed boating, biking and yoga. Larry is predeceased by his parents Frederick and Betty Hughton, he is survived by his brother David, his sister-in-law Debra, his nieces Kate, and Holly, his nephews Jared and his wife Sabra and John and his fiancé Elena, and 8 grand-nieces and nephews, Johnathan, Kara, Nick, Noah, Luca, Maren, David, and Isaiah. In addition to cousins Lance and Boots Hughston, and their families, Elaine Bergman Dixon and her family, Marc Hughston and his family, and Robin and Phil Banko and their family, there are many friends from childhood, from art school, and work. Larry will be remembered for his art work and his quick dry wit, but he will be remembered more for his loyalty, devotion, and quiet humble manner. He never mentioned his commendation of merit from the U.S. Air Force to his family, nor did we know of his awards at art school until now. Go with God Larry, and be at peace. We love you, we'll miss you; we'll remember you always. The Hughston family would like to thank all who cared for him, prayed for him, and comforted him during his brief time at Brookdale of Oro Valley.
