Obituary of Millard H. Childers

Millard "Mel" H. Childers, Jr., 87, passed away peacefully on July 24, 2019 in Tucson, Arizona. Mel was born on May 5, 1932 in Athens, Texas to Millard "Hollis" Childers, Sr. and Margaret (Bass) Childers. After several years of living in Tyler, Texas, he and his family moved to Tucson, Arizona in 1946. Following high school graduation, Mel went to college in Portland, Oregon. Over the years he lived in several states before returning back to Tucson to reside. Mel worked as a salesman, which suited his outgoing and friendly personality. In his later years he enjoyed helping "old" people with their errands and needs. Mel liked to keep busy. He raised violets and entered them in competitions, made and sold jewelry. He was an avid fan of U of A volleyball and basketball, and of the Tucson Toros baseball team. Camping in Rocky Point, Mexico was an enjoyable way for him to spend the weekend. He continued his love of music throughout his life. He played violin, or the fiddle as he called it, and played bass in a country western band. He also sang in a barbershop chorus. Mel loved having pets. He and Betty had many dogs in their years together. He raised exotic chickens for a brief time when they lived in Marana, AZ. Also in the household were various birds. In Mel's later years, one of the staples of his social life was the monthly lunch with any family members who could attend. Mel had a great sense of humor. He truly believed that having one could help a person through any situation. Mel is survived by his wife, Betty; daughters (from a previous marriage to Kathy Krahulec) Pam Childers, Sheri (Tom) Hettervig, Julie (Bob) Beck; step-son Bill (Erma) Brumley; grandchildren Sean (Linnea) Hettervig, Emily Hettervig, Alicia (Jarod) Schut, Casey Beck, Justin Brumley, Jessica Brumley; and brother David Bass. He was preceded in death by his parents, Hollis and Margaret Childers, and brother Charles Childers. At his request, no public service will be held. Interment will be at Marana Mortuary Cemetery. Mel will be missed and remembered fondly by family and friends.
