Obituary of Dorothy H Allen
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Dorothy Allen, but we rejoice that she is now pain free and at peace in her heavenly home.
Dottie, as she was known to family and friends, passed away on May 30, 2019, just a few weeks before her 91st birthday. She was born in Lancaster County, PA on June 26, 1928 to Ruth (Johns) and John Hertzog Hummer. After graduating Ephrata High School and secretarial school, she attended Juniata College in Huntington, PA., where she earned her bachelors degree in elementary education. While there she served as secretary in the student government and met her future husband and our father, Arthur B. Allen. They married December 27, 1952.
Dottie and Art raised four children in York, PA and upstate NY where Art held managerial positions for Bendix, GE and IBM. Before starting their family, Dottie was a second grade teacher. After their youngest child was in middle school, she taught preschool and was a church secretary. In addition to being a homemaker, she and our dad enjoyed many years of playing golf at Endwell Greens Golf Club and IBM Country Club in the Endwell, NY area. Dottie had a hole-in-one in 1986. Art had his 5th hole-in-one in 1987, just a few weeks before he died suddenly at age 59. They enjoyed many trips to Pennsylvania, Florida, Kansas City, Tucson and Atlanta to visit family.
In addition to golf and visiting family, Dottie enjoyed reading, writing short stories and poetry. She was very proud of her "Round Robin" letter, in which a group of eleven Juniata College gals created, and forwarded, a timely group exchange of personal news and photographs. This began when they graduated in 1952. Our mom added her last letter one month ago in early May, and it was numbered 1,291. That encompassed a lot of shared news of weddings, births, deaths, moves, new homes, congratulations and condolences over a period of 67 years. Our mother was the oldest member of the "RR," and now just three of the original eleven remain exchanging letters in one large manila envelope.
In addition to her husband, she is predeceased by her parents, her sister Mildred Zimmerman, two brothers, Clayton Hummer and Leon Hummer, as well as her Tucson daughter-in-law, Monica (Huerta) Allen. She is also predeceased by her former Endwell, NY neighbor and special friend, William Powell.
Dottie is survived by her four children: Karinne (Michael) Fish of Marietta, GA; Scott (Cathy) Allen of Scottsdale; Mark (Amber) Allen and Jane (Kevan) Schlamowitz, both of Tucson; as well as her six grandchildren: Alisa (Hugh) Moore and Brandon Fish, Atlanta, GA; Jack Allen, Phoenix; Tiffany Allen, Cody Allen, and Zach Schlamowitz, all of Tucson. She is also survived by one sister-in-law Lois Hummer Shank of Lancaster, PA, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Dottie moved to Tucson from Endwell, NY in 2011. She was a devoted member of Endwell UMC (NY) and St. Marks UMC (Tucson).
