Obituary of Josephine Shoumaker Ruiz

Josephine Shoumaker Ruiz, an Arizona native, born February 12, 1932, died March 29, 2019, in Gilbert, Arizona. She was a first generation Tucsonan, born to Richard and Maria Celsa Romo (ranchers) and is survived by her sister, Artie Royals. She is preceded in death by her two sisters, Jessie, Adeline, and brother, Richard. She met the love of her life, Douglas Henry Shoumaker in 1950 and married in July of 1953. After 44 years of marriage, his passing left Josephine heartbroken. Left to honor and remember her love, are her five children along with their families: Josephine (husband, Brian) King, Gail (husband, ,Michael) Holman, George (Katherine) Shoumaker, Jenet (husband, David) Soto, and Elsa Shoumaker. Grandchildren: Adriana Holman (husband, Brian McIntyre), Zachary (wife, Kathy Gainey, and their daughter, Lucy) King, Gabriella Soto (husband, Patrick Richardson), and Isabella Soto, along with many nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, and great great nieces and great great nephews. Two years after her husband's passing, she reconnected with and married a childhood friend, Herman Ruiz (deceased). Josephine enjoyed a successful career in fine jewelry and was recognized with awards and accolades. She played baseball as a pitcher and was an avid Arizona Diamondback fan. She generously supported and donated to many causes that touched her heart. When she wasn't enjoying baseball you could find her gardening, shopping, singing, dancing, caring for animals and doting on her children. She loved life large. She never met a stranger and everyone was her friend! She had a vivacious personality and was loved by all who met her. A Celebration of Life Mass will be held on Saturday, April 13, 2019 at 12:30pm at St. Philip's in the Hills Episcopal Church: 4440 N. Campbell Avenue, Tucson, AZ the Canon Debbie Royals presiding with Reception to follow at the Arizona Inn 2200 E.
