Obituary of Elma Davis

Elma Lorene Davis, 1920-2019, On February 19, 2019, the earthly life of Elma Lorene (Mathews) Davis peacefully drew to a close. Elma is survived by her son Jim Davis and daughter Ann Wise, twelve grandchildren, many great-grandchildren, and a few great-great-grandchildren. She passed away almost exactly 30 years after her beloved husband of 48 years, Floyd. Two daughters and a dear son-in-law, one grandson and a great-granddaughter preceded her in death.Elma's early life was spent in rural Kansas, and she and Floyd moved to Colorado with their two small children following his service in World War II with the Tenth Mountain Division in Italy. They soon added two more daughters to the family as they built their lives around church and community involvement in Colorado Springs. Other family members joined them in Colorado, and the children grew up with plenty of cousins and extended family fun with many years of holiday meals spent all together. For a woman who never learned to drive, it was amazing how much of our country Elma visited! She cherished the experience they had when they drove across the country with their three daughters to visit Washington DC and New England in the autumn of 1959. She and Floyd visited many states together in their pickup-mounted camper, fishing and enjoying wildlife and visiting family all along the way. A reunion trip with the Tenth Mountain Division Association in 1969 took them to Italy with a side trip to Ireland. (If Elma could have chosen a date for her memorial service, she might have actually chosen Saint Patrick's Day - how appropriate that we will be together to celebrate her life on that day.) Children and grandchildren made sure she got to visit Prince Edward Island, as a gift for her 85th birthday. She traveled there with a granddaughter and the trip took them, also, into Maine to see Acadia National Park, another longtime desire fulfilled. Needlepoint pieces and knitted sweaters and afghans, teddy bears and annual birthday cards signed "hugs and prayers" were created as gifts to her children, grandchildren, and friends. After living on her own until the age of 94, Elma went to live with a granddaughter and had constant company there for two and a half years. Elma's last year and a half were spent at My Family Assisted Living.
