Obituary of Maurice L. McCarty

MCCARTY, Maurice "Mac" L., died on September 8, 2018 of natural causes. He was born May 9, 1927 in West Virginia. He left School early to Join the Merchant Marines in 1944. He spent time in the Atlantic theatre During WWII transporting German POWs to the USA and later joined the US Navy where he spent time on active duty and the reserves where he retired as a LCDR. While in the US Naval reserves he received a degree from San Diego State University that allowed him to take a position with the California State University system as an educator and administrator. He retired from California Univ System in 1989 and moved from Los Alamitos, CA to Williamsburg VA and eventually to Tucson, AZ in 1995. He enjoyed teaching kids to read by volunteering in after school programs for 16 years. Mall walking, reading, world travel and regular card games with friends were his interests. He was preceded in death by his wife of 40+ years, Georgia. He is survived by son, Alan; daughter-in-law, Joanie; sister, Diane Preston of Florida; brother, Larry McCarty of Virginia; three grandsons, three great-grandchildren; numerous friends and relatives in Arizona, Calif and Virginia.
