Obituary of Kevin Charles Horstman
Kevin Charles Horstman, 66, died 29 Aug. 2018 in the presence of his family at his home in Oro Valley from complications related to renal cancer.
Kevin was born March 3, 1952, to Capt. William Charles (Charlie) and Wanda Luken Horstman in Ft. Worth, Texas. He grew up in Phoenix with his mother Wanda and brothers Nick and Gregg after his father's death while serving in the Air Force. He graduated from Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff with B.S. and M.S. degrees in Geology; he worked there for the U.S. Geological Survey, Astrogeology Branch where he developed his deep love of the Grand Canyon, planetary geology, and space exploration. He moved to Tulsa in 1979 where he work as a petroleum exploration geologist and remote sensing specialist for Cities Service Company. He completed his PH.D. in geology at The University of Arizona in 1996 and worked as a consulting structural and remote sensing geologist. He was a scientist-artist when it came to image processing and aerial map interpretation and was adept at visualizing geology in 3D.
He was married to Claire Dahlman from 1981-1990. He married Corolla Hoag on 11 April 1992 in Tucson and they enjoyed 26 years together.
Kevin was active in Catalina Rotary, Arizona Geological Society, and Sigma Gamma Epsilon Earth Science Honorary. He was an Endowment Member of the National Rifle Association and enjoyed the outdoors, minerals, classical music, Gordon Lightfoot, and everything related to electronics, optics, and fine machinery from engines, planes and military equipment to firearms.
Kevin had a wide-ranging, inquisitive mind interested in history and all details about how things worked on Earth and other planets and their interrelationships. He never met a stranger with whom he couldn't strike up a conversation. He was kind and helpful to others; he was energized by his work and friendships in Rotary and his behind-the-scenes work to scan and digitize the AGS publications for public access. He was respected and endeared by those who knew him. Spending time and sharing treasured memories with family and friends was an important part of Kevin's life.
Survived by wife Cori, brothers Steven Horstman (Linda) of Stillwater, OK; Nicholas Horstman (Colleen McCarthy) of Scottsdale, AZ; Michael Gerber (Beth) of Altamonte Springs, FL; Terry Gerber (Nancy) of Cave Creek; sisters-in-law Charlotte Horstman of Melbourne, FL, Samara Hoag (Jeanne Dorn); brother-in-law Calyx Hoag (Shellee); Nieces Heather Mackey of Gilbert, AZ; Stephanie Moinot of Melbourne, FL, and Kathryn Horstman, of New Orleans, LA; nephew Christopher Horstman of Tucson; and cousins Judy Peters (Tom Halverson) and Michael (Katherine) Foley.
