Obituary of Anne B. Van Auken
VAN AUKEN, Anne B. (Anne Dudley Bradstreet) of Tucson, passed away Friday, April 20, 2018, at the age of 95. Beloved daughter of World War I vet, John Endicott Bradstreet of Winnetka, IL, and Mary Virginia Watson of Louisville, KY, Anne was born in Evanston and grew up in Winnetka, IL where she attended the Winnetka Public Schools until high school, graduating in 1940 from Monticello in Godfrey, IL. She served in the Navy for two years during WWII. Her brother was killed in battle in 1944. After the war, she married a fellow sailor and moved to California, where she had her first daughter, Charlanne (1946). She moved back to Illinois and graduated from Northwestern University in 1951 with a degree in Education. She married her second husband, John Hansel in 1953 and had three more children: Brad (1954), Leslie (1956) and Mary (1959). When Leslie was a month old, she and John moved to Tucson, where John died in 1960. A single mom for six years, she taught nursery school at the Tucson Jewish Community Center. In 1966, she married a Wyoming cowboy, James L. Van Auken (1921-2012) who worked for the State of Arizona. They were happily married for 46 years and enjoyed life. Anne became an active golfer and member and past president (1972, 1979) of the Catalina Women's Golf Association; past president of the Randolph Women's Golf Association (1992); and member of the Dorado Women's Golf Association. She loved to hike, travel, cook, listen to music and was an avid reader and animal lover. Late in her life she suffered from Parkinson's Disease. To honor her memory her family will host a Celebration of Life at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 24, 2018 in the Cactus Room at Randolph Park Golf Course, 600 S. Alvernon Way. Event will consist of a Memorial Service and live music, including an open mic. Donations may be made to the Tucson Pops Orchestra. Arrangements by ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES, Dodge Chapel.
