Obituary of Edward W. Murphy
MURPHY, Edward W. (82), passed away on January 28, 2018. Professor Emeritus of Music, University of Arizona. During a phone interview, "Dr. Murphy" was hired to teach horn, percussion, and undergraduate music theory at the University of Arizona in 1961. He later developed the graduate music theory program with analysis courses in 18th and 19th Century music and seminars in the music of Richard Wagner, Gustav Mahler, Richard Strauss, and Anton Bruckner. Ed enriched students' lives with his detailed analysis of the great works of Western music by understanding the structure, historical forces, and genius of the composers. His students continue to share his knowledge and passion with younger generations. Ed was a positive influence on many. He is remembered as an outstanding educator, musician, and a gentle, loving husband and father to his wife, Heather and sons, Richard (Carol), Frank, George, James (Cheryl), and Patrick (Ayako). A private family gathering is planned. Arrangements by ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES, Dodge Chapel.
