Obituary of Bettie J Mazel

Our mother, Elizabeth Jean Moynihan (Mazel) aka Bettie Jean Mazel, born December 20th, 1920 in Detroit Michigan, daughter of Gerald J. and Marie G. Connelly Moynihan of Detroit Michigan, passed away at age 97, from natural causes, January 27, 2018, Tucson Arizona. Bettie was married to Anthony ( Tony) G. Mazel March 20th, 1943 in Spartanburg N.C. until his passing May 15, 1995. They were Tucsonans since 1948. Bettie graduated from the School of Nursing in 1942 at Providence Hospital in Detroit. Bettie was the mother of eleven children. Preceding her in death were three of her children, Michael Mazel, Timothy Mazel and Gregory Mazel. Bettie is survived by her children: Maureen A. Neurath, Ellen M. Mazel, Kathleen L. Mazel, Mary Lynn Kline, Christina M Bradford and Kenneth G.J. Mazel of Tucson. Bonnie M. Shultz of Cotati Calif. and Mary Lee Davidson of Boise Idaho. Bettie is also survived by grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. Bettie and Tony owned and operated "The White Chief Market" on the corner of Pima and Swan from 1948 to 1957. ( see: historic photos of Tucson). In 1959 Bettie returned to Nursing while raising her family, worked nights at St. Mary's Hospital starting in the emergency room. In 1969 Bettie was selected by Drs. Morton Aronoff, Philip Fleishman and John Pierce to be a part of their team as Director of the newly opened Burn Unit at St. Mary's Hospital. This burn unit under her direction became the largest and best serving Arizona and the State of Sonora Mexico with aiding ALL Serious burn patients. Under Bettie's direction, supervision and knowledge of burns and Tony's specialty with infectious diseases, her unit was the only burn unit in our country that did not once have a Staph infection. Bettie directed this unit until her retirement in 1994. Bettie did ministry work with burn care mainly in the S.W part of our country and also worked in South Korea for three months on a special mission teaching about burns…. In retirement, Bettie read a good deal, lived in Rocky Point Sonora Mexico off and on and traveled worldwide. Bettie will be missed greatly by her family. Burial Services will be held at Holy Hope Cemetery February 22nd at 12:00 PM. Followed by a Celebration of Mass and a good "Ole" 'Irish Cele' at the Mazel Family Home… all friends of Bettie are welcome.
