Obituary of Thomas David Boyer MD

BOYER, Thomas David, MD lost his battle with cancer at the age of 74 on January 11, 2018 at his home in Tucson, Arizona. Tom graduated from the University of Redlands with a B.S. in Biology and from the University of Southern California with a M.D. of medicine. He completed his internship at New York University Medical Center and residency in Hepatology at the University of Southern California Medical Center. He served with the United States Public Health Service in the U.S. Coast Guard, New London, CT from 1971-1973. Tom was internationally renowned for his work in Hepatology and his contributions to the field will be remembered. His book, Zakim and Boyer's Hepatology, in its seventh edition, is considered the definitive textbook on liver disease worldwide. He has also authored innumerable scholarly articles and has been routinely listed among the Best Doctors in America. As a foremost expert on liver disease he served as president of the American Association for the Study of Liver Disease and a recipient of their Distinguished Service Award. He was also President of the International Association for the Study of the Liver. Prior to his retirement in July 2017, Tom was the director of the Liver Institute at the University of Arizona which has been renamed the Thomas D. Boyer Liver Institute. Tom also practiced medicine and conducted clinical research at Emory University (Director of Gastroenterology), University of California, San Francisco, and the Veterans Administration Medical Center, San Francisco. Tom was a devoted son, husband, brother, father and grandpa, a thoughtful and supportive friend, and a loving companion. For those who knew him, they were proud to call him Dad, brother, Grandpa, friend, and colleague. Tom's favorite past times included golf with his Skyline Men's Golfing Group, playing with his grandchildren and dog, Addie, giving advice to his children, and sitting on his back patio taking in the view. Words to describe Tom include forthright, honest, incredibly intelligent, supportive and kind. He is survived by his brother, Clayton Boyer of Phoenix, his daughter, Sarah Howard (Scott), grandchildren, Mathew and Evan Howard of San Francisco, son, Thomas David Boyer, Jr. of Phoenix, his loving companion, Sherry Laemmermann, and his faithful dog, Addie. He was predeceased by his parents, Clayton and Agellah, and wife, Carol. Tom will be missed by every life he touched. A gathering of family, friends, and colleagues will meet to celebrate his life on Sunday, January 21, 2018 from 3:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. at Skyline Country Club, 5200 E. St. Andrews Dr, Tucson. Skyline Country Club was his home away from home.
