Obituary of Sylvia Mae Gay
Sylvia Mae Gay, age 90, passed away on November 3, 2017, in Sahuarita, AZ.
She was born on September 17, 1927, to Frank and Gladys White in Gibsonia, PA.
She graduated from Grove City High School in Grove City, PA, and then attended Slippery Rock Teachers College.
After a move to Pueblo, Colorado she married Alvin A. Gay. They lived several different states and had five children. After divorcing, Sylvia moved to Tucson, AZ where she lived for 46 years.
She completed her Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education at the University of Arizona and began teaching at Palo Verde Christian School, where she taught fourth grade for 25 years, during which time she completed her Master's Degree in Education.
Her passion was always God, her children and grandchildren, and her love for teaching. She traveled to England twice to visit her daughter, Carrie, and twice to the Holy Land, and was always eager to visit the grandkids. She enjoyed sewing quilts for her grandchildren and great grandchildren but most of all just playing with them.
After she retired from teaching, reading became a serious hobby. In addition to her Bible study she amassed quite a collection of Christian historical novels.
She was preceded in death by Father, Frank Kenneth White and Mother, Gladys Mae (Dunlap) White.
She is survived by brother, Walter K. White of San Diego, CA and sister, Joye (White) Redding of Sierra Vista, AZ and children; Kathy (Gay) Hager, Jack Gay, Larry Gay, Lorna (Gay) Mitchell, and Carrie (Gay) Stanley; nine grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at Adair Dodge Chapel, 1050 N Dodge Blvd, Tucson, AZ on Thursday, November 9, 2017 at 1:30 pm with the Rev. Kevin Redding officiating. Burial will take place in the East Lawn Palms Cemetery at 3:00 pm Thursday, November 9, 2017.
