Obituary of Elizabeth Jean Phillips Carlson
Elizabeth "Betty" Jean Phillips Carlson, 84, a 50-year Greenwich resident, passed away peacefully in Tucson, AZ on June 10, 2017. Born May 20, 1933 in Middletown, CT, Betty was a descendant of the first Mayor of Boston, John Phillips and Abolitionist, Wendell Phillips and was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Betty graduated from Greenwich High School with the class of 1951 and attended Penn State University. She was active for many years in the Town of Greenwich RTM and was the life of the party everywhere she lived, including Old Greenwich/Riverside, CT, Quechee, VT, Vero Beach, FL and Tucson, AZ. A loving wife, mother and grandmother, Betty also loved her many golfing friends and the game itself, acing three holes in her lifetime. She was a long-time member of The Rocky Point Club, Innis Arden Golf Club, The Quechee Club, Hawk's Nest and Skyline Country Club. She was preceded in death by her parents, Wendell S. Phillips and Dorothy Lord Phillips and her sister Muriel Phillips Conway. Betty is survived by her husband of 61 years, Peter Eric Carlson, their children Barbara C. Wheeler, Peter E. Carlson, Jr (Sue) and June C. Hussey (Bill), ten grandchildren, one great grandchild, numerous nieces and nephews and her beloved cat, Lisa. A private service is planned in Greenwich in late July.
