Obituary of Irwin M Freundlich

Dr. Irwin Freundlich, 86, of Tucson, passed away on March 20th, 2017. He received his medical degree from Duke University School of Medicine in 1959 and did his Residency in Radiology at Jefferson Medical College Hospital in Philadelphia from 1960 - 1964. He had a long and distinguished career as a Radiologist, serving as Professor of Radiology for the University of Arizona Health Sciences Center (now Banner University Medical Center) from 2000 to 2011 and as its Training Director of Diagnostic Radiology from 1971- 1982. He also served as Chief of Diagnostic Radiology and Head of the Thoracic and Mammography sections at the UA Medical Center from 1971-1982 and as Deputy Chairman for the Department of Radiology at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, University of Texas, in Houston from 1989-1993. During his career he was invited to give over 100 presentations, wrote for many publications and authored four books on Radiology. He returned from Houston to work in the UA Department of Radiology until his retirement at the age of 83, an continued to teach his course to first year medical students until the age of 85. In addition to his career in medicine, Dr. Freundlich was a man of letters, a voracious reader, a lover of classical music and heaping plates of oysters. He loved his canine companions dearly, Sam, Max, Minerva and Mickey Augustus. Above all, throughout his life, he was devoted to his own and others' learning. Dr. Freundlich is survived by his brother, Richard Freundlich of New York, NY; his daughter Sondra Hall, of Sebastopol, CA; his son, Fred Freundlich of Gernika, Spain; and his daughter, Jackie McFarland of Lexington, KY.
