Obituary of Doris Anna Derickson

DERICKSON, Doris Beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend, Doris Anna Cline Derickson died January 28, 2017, and is now at peace and in heaven with her beloved husband, Phil. She was born in Philadelphia on April 14, 1922, the only child of Emma and Walton Cline, and raised in Wilmington, Delaware. She felt so blessed by her family of five children (and spouses), 12 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Doris attended the University of Delaware where she graduated at the top of her class with a degree in English Literature. We loved having her on our side for trivia games because she always knew the answers. She married Philip Gregg Derickson on October 2, 1943 and took care of their first son, David while Phil served as an army doctor in the Pacific Theater during WWII. Following the war they lived in New York and then Ohio where they had their second child, Judy. Doris was a supportive wife and mother while Phil completed his residency in orthopedic surgery. In 1950 Doris and Phil moved to Tucson to start his medical practice. Three more children were born - Jeff, Jack and Jill. Doris enjoyed participating in family activities with St. Mark's Presbyterian Church, the PTA, the Lighthouse YMCA, Assistance League, and Tucson Garden Club. Doris and Phil shared many interests, including gardening, Southwestern Indian culture and art, and the Richard III Society. They loved to travel and went on many trips to far off locales. She had a bright, inquisitive mind and a curiosity about the world that lives on in her children and grandchildren. One of her most important values was family togetherness and she loved spending time with all members of her family. She was elated to see the close bonds continue through the next generations. She is survived by her five children: son, David Gregg Derickson (Ceal), his four children, Elizabeth, Jeremy, Jennifer and Christopher, and four grandchildren, Carter, Andrew, Evann, Alexis; daughter, Judith Anne Derickson; son, Dr. Jeffrey Cline Derickson (Cece), their three daughters, Debbie, Dana, Darcy and seven grandchildren, Lincoln, Kason, Greta, Wyatt, August, Easton, Jensen; son, John (Jack) Philip Derickson (Candace), their three daughters, Jonelle, Jenna, Joanna, and two grandchildren, Cora, Juliette; daughter, Jill Derickson Wheatley (Jeff) and two children, James Coffin, Jalyn. The family would like to acknowledge the special caregivers at Catalina Foothills Adult Care and Alternatives in Home Care for the extraordinary loving and kind attention they gave to Doris. In lieu of flowers, please send contributions to your favorite charity in her name. The Memorial Service will be Sunday, March 5, 2017, at 2:00 p.m. at St. Mark's Presbyterian Church in Tucson. We will always cherish our memories of Doris as a wonderful, caring, loving, giving person. Arrangements by ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES, Dodge Chapel.
