Obituary of Richard Thomas Newcomb
NEWCOMB, Richard Thomas Professor Emeritus at University of Arizona, was born in San Jose, CA, on May 17, 1928, and passed away peacefully at his home in Tucson, AZ, on January 3, 2017. He was a well-regarded mineral economist, consultant and businessman who graduated with a B.A. from UCLA in Philosophy (via St. John's Seminary College) in 1949, an M.B.A. in finance from Stanford in 1953 and a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Minnesota in 1965. A member of the hoteling family of John Archibald Newcomb and a great-nephew of the mathematician and astronomer Simon Newcomb, he will be remembered for his incisive intellect, his boundless devotion to philosophical, economical and Classical discourse, and his profound abiding love of his family and Church. He served our country in the Army (Infantry 1953-1955). Survived by his son, Richard T. Newcomb II, of Irving, TX; daughters, Patricia M. Newcomb of Rochester, NY, and Meg Sax of Tucson, and their spouses and children. Memorial Mass this Saturday, January 7th, 2017 at 11:00 a.m., at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 5150 N.
