Obituary of Jack Holt Garner
GARNER, Jack Holt, Jr., 66, went to be with his Lord on November 28, 2016. A lifetime resident of Tucson, AZ, he was born on October 15, 1950 to Jack H. Garner, Sr. and Loretta McCorkle Williams. Jack was a graduate of Rincon High School in 1968 and earned his BS in Physical Education from the University of Arizona in 1972. Following graduation he taught at Magee Middle School before transitioning to a career with Exxon where he owned and operated a service station for 24 years. In 1998 he opened Garner Automotive, which he successfully ran until his retirement in 2015. Jack knew most of his customers by first name and their loyalty towards him was a true reflection of his character. The quintessential family man, Jack was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and son. He faithfully loved his wife and experienced tremendous joy from his grandchildren. Jack cherished his role as a father and was always present, supportive and loving beyond measure. As a man of strong Christian values he led by example and was a lifelong member of Bethel Community Baptist Church where he was affectionately known as "Bethel's Baby" because he was born on the day the church was dedicated. A fixture on the baseball diamond, Jack was an All-City and All-State second baseman for the Rincon Rangers in high school and later in life the coach for both of his son's Little League teams. His involvement in city basketball leagues is legendary, and as an avid golfer he thoroughly enjoyed being out on the course playing a round with his closest friends. Sports were part of his DNA and his allegiance to the Los Angeles Dodgers, Dallas Cowboys and, most notably, the Arizona Wildcats never wavered. His generosity and ability to make you laugh were unmatched and those who knew him were incredibly proud to call him a friend. Jack is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of 44 years, Virginia "Ginny"; sons, Curt (Chelsea) Garner and Travis Garner; four grandchildren, Asher, Abram, Aaron and Aurelia; brothers, Gary (Susie) Williams, Lance (Anne) Williams and William (Sherrie) Garner and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Jack was preceded in death by his parents; brother, William "Billy" Garner and sister, Deborah Jackson. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, December 10, 2016, 3:00 p.m. at Bethel Community Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, please pay tribute to Jack with gifts to Bethel Community Baptist Church, 446 S. Plumer Ave., Tucson, AZ 85719 or The National Stroke Association , www.stroke.org.
