Obituary of Laura Navarrete Samoy
Laura N. Samoy was born on June 21, 1928 in Manila, Philippines to Nieves Flores and Lope Navarrete. On September 22, 1956 she married the love of her life, Gregorio Daluz Samoy Jr., MD. She had three children, Debbie (Byron) McMillan, Joey (Susan) Samoy, Sarah (Robert) Hom. She was the proud grandma of ten: Chantelle, Kenny (Emily), and Natalie McMillan; Jessica (Will Plunkett), Jeremy (Valarie), and Craig Samoy; Rachel, Emily, Andrew, and Daniel Hom. She was blessed with four great grandchildren: Joey and Kaylee McMillan; Avery Samoy and Sam Plunkett. She had seven siblings. Carmen (Felix Cajayon), Juana (Julio Bejar), Philemon (Arcenia), Mariano (Juliana), Arturo, Rosine (Constantino Aguirre), Pacita (Eleazar Samoy). Laura and Greg grew up in Bacoor, Cavite, Philippines.
She graduated from the University of Philippines with a Doctor of Dental Medicine Degree in 1951. She worked at Philippine Sugar Inc. as an administrator. While working there she also practiced dentistry from her home. In 1961, Greg moved to New York City to be a pediatrician at Beth Israel Hospital. Laura remained home in the Philippines with Debbie and Joey. In 1964, they joined Greg and moved to Memphis, TN where Greg worked at St. Jude's Hospital and where Sarah was born a year later. The family returned to the Philippines for one year in 1966. From the Philippines, the family moved to Sumatra, Indonesia where Greg worked for Mobile Oil as the company pediatrician. In 1973, they came to the United States and lived in Justice, Illinois. In 1974, the family moved to Clinton, MA. Throughout the years Laura always helped Greg with his practice. In order to be closer to Greg's sister and for Debbie and Joey to go to the University of Arizona, as well as escape the cold winters of Massachusetts, they moved to Tucson in 1978. She worked for Dr. Ernest J. Sayre for over 25 years as his receptionist. In 1980, the family became citizens of the United States of America. Laura loved her family. She loved to entertain and host parties at her home. Her greatest joy was to cook for her family and friends. She was a faithful member of Christ Presbyterian Church for thirty-seven years.
Laura Samoy will be remembered, as a woman of faith who gave herself to the service of the Lord and who deeply loved her family and friends. She lived Matthew 6:33 "But seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you." Laura was very generous. She believed the more you gave, the more you received. In her honor, please continue this legacy and love all those you meet. In lieu of flowers, Memorial Donations can be made to Christ Presbyterian Church.
Laura Samoy's Memorial Service will be held this Friday, October 21, 2016 at 2:00 pm at Christ Presbyterian Church 6565 E. Broadway, Tucson, AZ 85710.
