Though I know that this is a difficult time for you, my hope is that you will be comforted from God's inspired word the Bible. John 5:28,29 and Revelation 21: 3,4 gives hope of a future resurrection and the complete elimination of death, pain and mourning. Under Jesus' kingdom rule we have this and much more to look forward to. Please accept my deepest condolences.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the Peters family. I have known Richard for about twenty years, and I was always made to feel like one of the family. It was a pleasure to get to know him and Elaine.

I was so sad when I heard the news of Dick Peters passing from Michele. Mr. Peters (and he will always be Mr. Peters to me) was always an inspiration from our first meeting in 1975 when I started at the UofA until the last time we had lunch together in 2015 in Dexter, Michigan. Mr. Peters gave me my first break playing professionally with him in the Tucson Symphony, when I had never played in an orchestra prior. He supported me in my musical endeavors while I was a student at the University of Arizona in so many ways, I cannot even begin to list them all. He was always there for me whenever I needed him, from supplying letters of recommendation long after I had graduated, whether it was for a playing gig in South Africa or applying to graduate school at Yale, to some how finding me living in Michigan 30 years later.
I had no memory that Ypsilanti, MI was his home town, or that he had graduated from Eastern Michigan and the University of Michigan, but somehow he found me and called when he was in town and took me out to lunch. Just last year he made one more trip to Michigan and called to see if we could get together. When he heard that I had left working at the UofM and that I was trying to get back into playing and teaching trumpet, he had nothing but encouraging words to share. He even sent me some music from his personal library that I might be able to use with my students in my new trumpet studio. He was one of the most supportive, kindest and best teachers I ever had and I will always remember him for all that he did for me.
My thoughts are with his family in this difficult time. I know that there are no words to say, but please always know that he will always hold a special place in my heart and I will never forget him.
Sincerely,
Linda (Koska) Popovic

Richard, and his wife, Elaine, were my pleasant and welcoming next door neighbors. We shared many stories with an occasional wine and O'Doul's, and some of my most pleasant memories are hearing his music float over the garden walls and into the homes for all to enjoy. Thank you, Richard, for sharing your time and love of music. Another fine musician is playing in Heaven.

My memories of Dick Peters: He was a man who was gentle and kind, quiet and dignified, helpful and friendly. When I was a new faculty member at the University of Arizona, he reached out to me with kindness and applauded me for raising issues that needed to be discussed. Over the years, I accompanied many of his trumpet students on their sonatas and concertos, working under his excellent tutelage and musicianship to produce a viable performance. His musical suggestions were always positive and encouraging, leading students and me to do our best in performance without being anxious or nervous. He was a fine teacher and a gifted musician.
A memorable experience was when he and Elaine retired and moved to SaddleBrooke. They invited many from the School for a house warming in the new community. How far out it seemed from the city and there were only about 150 houses in SaddleBrooke in those days. Roy and Dusty Johnson were also at that party and it was fun to see the Peters' new house in a new community. As life turned out, when my spouse and I retired, we, too, moved to SaddleBrooke, long after the Peters had moved back closer to the city. Now it is more like 4000 houses and the city has followed us out here. Time marches on. What fun it would have been if the Peters had been here when we retired. We might even have done some music together if not attended a party.
I am so sorry to hear of Dick's death and I wish Elaine and the family the best. The bell tolls for all of us, whether sooner or later, but we can take comfort in our spiritual beliefs and for having lived a life so well, as Dick did. Farewell, friend.

One of my earliest memories of Dick is at the reception following his and Elaine’s wedding in the backyard of Elaine’s and my parents’ home in 1952. During the reception, our father Van C. Kniebes, who had a great sense of humor, came out of the house with a shotgun. Dad, who owned the Kniebes Music Mart in St. Joseph, Michigan, at the time, had traded a violin for Elaine’s and Dick’s wedding cake. I played the coronet in high school, college and in dance bands so Dick and I had a lot in common from the beginning. My wife Susan and I frequently talk about the time that Dick was practicing his trumpet in a canyon in Lake Powell when the two of us and Dick and Elaine went on a house boat adventure there in April 1996. Any other house boaters within ear shot must have been amazed at what they were hearing. Susan and I spent a number of Thanksgivings with the Peters crew in locations from Texas to Idaho. Dick always made us feel like part of his family. Duane Kniebes

Dear Mrs. Peters, I got to know Mr. Peters and you when he joined the UA School of Music faculty. I was a sophomore and I was Jack Lee's secretary, hence I got to know Mr. Peters very well during all my years of school. He was so kind and so much fun. When something really tickled him, he had a twinkle in his eye and the greatest chuckle. I remember our many exceptional band trips, where at times you were a chaperone also. Mr. Peters was such a fine example of an educator, a musician, and a gentleman. He was a person of high character who had far reaching impact. As a teacher I always signed up my school for the annual TSO Children's Concert with the accompanying in-school ensemble performances. Each year when the brass ensemble would arrive I got to visit with Mr. Peters for a while. On occasion they would play variations on some theme, and more than once when I asked him for a recording of it, he in no time sent one over. I was always very fond of him not only as a person, but also as a role model. I learned so much from him, not just musically, but also by example, through his teaching techniques. Throughout my teaching career I was able to consciously employ the gift of his professional legacy. I send you and your family my most sincere thoughts and personal reflection of a life well lived. Although I hadn't seen him in several years, I know the world of humanity and the world of music has suffered a significant loss on his passing. Fondly, Kay

I knew Richard several years ago at Cardiac Rehab. I always enjoyed chatting with him and loved his dry sense of humor.
