Obituary of George Bland
BLAND, George died peacefully at home on April 15, 2016. A proud native son, George was born in Tucson on February 27, 1925. He attended Tucson High and the University of Arizona, where he excelled in athletics and academics. He was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity and developed an unwavering and passionate love for Wildcat sports. His college career was interrupted by WWII when he served as a U.S. Army paratrooper. He returned home with a Purple Heart to resume his studies at the UofA and subsequently Harvard Dental School. Returning to Tucson in 1952, he brought with him the specialty of oral surgery. He was highly respected by his colleagues and deeply involved in community affairs. His involvement included the Tucson El Conquistadors, the Kiwanis Club, and serving as President of both the Arizona Dental Association and the Tucson Country Club. A cowboy at heart, George purchased the Sierra Vista Ranch in 1971 near Sasabe, AZ and became a gentleman rancher for over 20 years. He and his beloved wife Avonne, along with family and many dear friends, created years of memories in the shadows of the Baboquiviri Mtns. George was dedicated to his life-long friends and was always open to create new ones. He will be remembered for many different reasons including his strong personality, inexhaustible humor, and true dedication to his family. An amateur historian, he was always delighted to share his stories of Tucson's early days. Recently preceded in death by his wife, Avonne of 72 years. He is survived by his sons, Steven (Jacqueline), Andrew (Jill) and daughter, Sally (Jim); seven adoring grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, May 6, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. at the El Camino Baptist Church, 7777 E. Speedway. Memorial contributions may be made to the So.
