Obituary of Alice Sutherland

Alice Sotomayor Sutherland Dearly loved her family, and is now joining her beloved family members in heaven. She died peacefully October 28, 2015 at home, where she was lovingly cared for by her three daughters. We thank God for giving us such a wonderful person whom we knew as Mom, Nana or Sister. Alice Sotomayor was born October 20, 1931 in Tucson to Amelia (Ortega) and Florencio. Graduating from Tucson High in 1950, she put aside her college ambitions to help support the family. She worked as a skilled technician in photo retouching, an art now lost in the digital age. In 1952, she married William R. Sutherland, and in succeeding years, they designed and built three family homes. She gave birth to and raised four daughters. They were her lifelong joy, along with five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Alice was devoted to our Lord, family, Catholic Church and to the community. She is survived by daughters, Debra (Bryan) Motzkin, Catherine (Michael) Hartline and Toni (Mike) Carroll; five grandchildren, Jennifer Motzkin, Joe Motzkin, Eric (Amber) Hartline, Tim (Kristin) Hartline, Matt Hartline and eight great-grandchildren, Christopher, Evan, Elizabeth, Emma, Roman, Mackenzie, Khloe and Ava; two brothers, Ramon (Regina) Sotomayor and Frank (Barbara) Sotomayor. She was predeceased by William, her husband of 62 years, and by daughter, Elizabeth. She was also predeceased by her parents, brother, Ernest and sister, Dora Lacome. Visitation will be Wednesday, November 4, 2015, from 4:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m., with Rosary at 5:00 p.m. at ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES, Avalon Chapel, 8090 N. Northern Ave. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, November 5, 2015 at St. Odilia Catholic Church, 7570 N. Paseo del Norte. Interment will be at Holy Hope Cemetery with reception following at St. Odilia Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers, please consider Donate Life Arizona.
