Obituary of Sally Ann Shumway
Sally Ann Shumway 12/26/1925 - 5/5/2015 A pioneer for women in the field of automotive engineering, Sally completed a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from the University of Michigan. She single-handedly reared four children, returning to work to support the family. Summer weekends were spent camping, and Sally returned to UM to earn a Master's of Business Administration. As a manager at Ford Motor Company, Sally ran the emissions testing lab. She was VP of the Society of Women Engineers, and was lauded by UM's Women in Science and Engineering program for her trailblazing accomplishments. Sally fell in love with the blue skies of Tucson while visiting-four days after retiring from Ford, she moved to the sunny, dry climate. She found her true love, Richard Shumway; they recently celebrated 25 years of blissful marriage. They traveled around the country in a trailer, and then around the world. Sally volunteered at local organizations-she was a docent at the Tucson Zoo and Tohono Chul Park, Kairos and Folsom Prion ministries and taught sewing to at-risk girls. She and Richard were on the leadership team of the Episcopal Church's Cursillo movement-a ministry of spiritual hope and healing. Her most meaningful recent venture was with Daughters of the King. Sally would want you to know that "No challenge is too big: with God's help, you can do anything you set your mind to." Sally is survived by her beloved husband, Richard and children, Sandy and Laura McKee of Tucson, Kate Trainor of Boxboro, MA, Sue and Dave Griffin of Gilbert, AZ and Beth McKee of Dallas, TX. She leaves a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, stepchildren and their families. The family expresses love and special thanks to Richard, for his unwavering commitment to his wife. A casual Memorial Service celebrating Sally will be held at Christ the King Episcopal Church on Saturday, May 23, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. Donations to Christ the King are encouraged instead of flowers. Arrangements by ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES, Avalon Chapel.
