Obituary of James C McBrearty MD
Dr. James C. McBrearty
beloved father, husband, professor, teacher and colleague, was taken from us on March 16, 2015. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth (Betty) and his two children, Danielle and Brian.
Jim was born December 2, 1941 in Philadelphia, PA, the son of Charles and Annie Hone McBrearty. He received his Ph.D. at the University of Illinois in 1968, and married Betty in the same year. Jim came to the Department of Economics at the University of Arizona where he taught for the next 46 years. Jim specialized in labor economics and was also a labor arbitrator. The Business College seconded Jim to the University of Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates in order to set up their business college, and he was Dean of the Business School there for over four years. Later, he escorted students through Spain and Italy during summer session, while teaching courses for their business minor.
In the course of his long career Jim taught literally thousands of students, many of whom kept in touch long after. He could hardly go anywhere in Tucson without running into a former student. Jim truly loved teaching and students, saying they kept him young. He will be missed by many, but as he often said to his students, "Keep the faith."
The family wishes to thank Casa de la Luz Hospice and HomeWatch CareGivers for their assistance during a difficult period. A Mass in celebration of life will be held for Jim on Friday, April 10, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 5150 N. Valley View Road. Arrangements by ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES, Avalon Chapel.
