Obituary of Marian Turner Tofel
Marian Turner Tofel 5/9/1919 - 6/8/2014 Marian Turner Tofel, 95, was an artist, businesswoman, friend, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother to people far beyond the scope of her immediate family. She died at her home in Tucson on June 8 accompanied by family. Born in Memphis, Tenn. and raised in Plainview, New Jersey, Marian earned a bachelor's degree from Connecticut College, before moving to Tucson in 1949. Marian started and helped manage several Tucson businesses with her husband Joe, including Handy Andy hardware stores, Copycat, an art supply and craft shop where she taught sculpture and painting, and notably, the Tucson Racquet & Fitness Club in 1967. She was active in the day-to-day operations of the TRFC for more than three decades. An iconoclast, she stood out for her boldness and creativity, boundless generosity and inquisitive mind. She loved fiercely, never fractionally, opening her home and heart to friends and family. She was an avid tennis player and artist, completing hundreds of paintings in her lifetime. She is survived by six sons and one daughter: Rich (Kay) Tofel, Steve (Sally) Tofel, Binx (Linda) Selby, Liz (Ron) Barris, Bill (Suzy) Selby, Jeff (Sandi) Selby, Buzz (Kris) Selby; 14 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and her adopted family, the Flores. Friends, family and all who knew Marian are invited to celebrate her life at 6:00 p.m., Saturday, August 30, 2014 at the Tucson Racquet & Fitness Club.
