Obituary of Barbara Soto

Barbara Soto of Tucson, Arizona, was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, on April 17, 1934. She passed away peacefully on January 13, 2014. Barb was preceded in death by her parents, Clyde and Margaret Scholl; son, David Soto; and her loving husband, Arthur Soto. Survived by her sons, Christopher Soto (Jan), Scott Soto, and Nick Soto; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Her father's health issues resulted in the family moving to Tucson, when she was very young. The Arroyo Café on Speedway Boulevard was designed, built and operated by the family for many years. Barbara attended Tucson High School and the University of Arizona, where she received her Bachelor's degree in education. She was a 5th- and 6th-grade teacher at several elementary schools in TUSD. Geography became a passion of hers, and she was one of the first Teaching Consultants for the Arizona Geographic Alliance, training in Washington DC with National Geographic. She was affectionately called "Ms. Place" and presented original geography lessons at local, state and national conferences. Visitation with the family will begin at 6:00 p.m. before the 7:00 p.m. Rosary at ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES, Dodge Chapel on Friday, January 31, 2014. A Celebration of Barb's life will be at Our Mother of Sorrows at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, February 1, 2014. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Arizona Geographic Alliance in Barbara's name.
